How to Sleep Train Twins: Everything You Need to Know

Jul 16, 2025

Introduction: Why Twin Sleep Is Extra Hard

Let’s just start by acknowledging how difficult sleep can be for parents of twins.

Because it’s not just one baby’s rhythm they have to take care of — it’s two babies. And they may not always follow the same rhythm.

Especially at night, one may wake up and just as you get that baby back to sleep, the other one may wake up. So essentially, you’re getting no sleep at night. Nobody is able to catch a break unless you have additional help — which a lot of parents don’t.

Sleep training twins can bring the much-needed respite that twin parents need, especially at night, so they can recover their energy and be ready for a whole new day to manage and spend quality time with their twins.

A Personal Note from Me

I’m not a twin mother, but surprisingly, I’ve not only worked with many families who have twins — two of my closest friends, my cousin, and even the co-host of my parenting podcast The Modern Indian Parent are all twin moms.

Having worked with them, seeing their children grow up, and guiding them through their sleep journeys — plus the work I’ve done as a sleep consultant in Singapore and India — gives me a lot of insights that I want to share with you today about twin sleep and how to sleep train twins effectively.

A very interesting thing about my journey:
One of the reasons I became a sleep consultant is because of a twin mom who had her babies just one month before I had mine. She sleep trained her twins and told me about it — and that’s how I got introduced to the world of sleep training.

My world completely shifted once I sleep trained my baby and started sleeping through the night.
I have this friend — a mom of twins — to thank for it. She still continues to be one of my closest friends, and her twin daughters are now my daughter’s close friends.

So I’ve seen firsthand the kind of life-changing impact that twin baby sleep help and sleep training can have on the lives of twin parents.

How to Sleep Train Twins – Step by Step

1. The Method Is the Same as for Singletons

The good thing is: the methods you use are not that different from sleep training one baby.
The steps you follow remain the same.

As a baby sleep consultant Singapore families trust — through my programs and masterclasses that reach parents all over the world — the steps I recommend are:

  1. Optimize the baby’s sleep space

  2. Create an age-appropriate routine

  3. Reduce night feeds

  4. Use a responsive sleep training method

Now let me walk you through each step specifically for twins.

2. Sleep Space: Together or Apart?

A lot of parents ask me:

  • Should my twins sleep in separate rooms or the same room?

  • Should they sleep train together or one at a time?

And I always tell them:
Begin with the end in mind.

If you eventually want your babies to sleep in the same room — ideally, sleep training should happen in the same room as well.

Of course, the next question is:
Wouldn’t they just wake each other up and make things harder?

Yes — in the initial days, it’s likely:

  • One baby goes down

  • The other wakes up crying

  • Wakes the first one again

That’s part of the learning process in twin sleep training. You just need to push through those first few days.

Eventually, they become unbothered by each other’s sounds and sleep through. Once both babies are sleeping through the night — everyone’s peaceful.

And the best part?
They’ve now learned how to sleep together and even give each other company at night.

3. Routine: Keep It Synchronized

When it comes to routines, it’s important to keep both twins on the same schedule — for naps, milk, and solids.

This reduces the confusion and mental load parents have to carry while planning two different routines.
Put them down to sleep at the same time. Pick them up at the same time. Do it together.

It will make your life a lot easier.

Yes — it’s possible your twins have slightly different sleep needs, but they won’t be vastly different.

Here’s a tip I use with many families:

Use a 30-minute rule:
If Twin A wakes up, wake the other twin up within 30 minutes.
If Twin B usually needs more sleep, this allows them to get a bit extra while keeping schedules aligned.

4. Night Feeds: One Baby or Both?

For sleep training, we ideally want to be down to:

  • One night feed, or

  • No night feeds (depending on age and feeding type — breast/formula)

This is something I assess in my 1:1 sleep training programs to help you make the right decision.

With twins, there’s usually a difference in:

  • Amount of milk they drink

  • Feeding patterns

  • Total 24-hour milk intake

Here are the 3 scenarios I commonly see:

Scenario 1: Twin A needs night feed, Twin B doesn’t
Offer feed only to the one who needs it. Let the other one sleep.

Scenario 2: Both need night feeds
When Twin A wakes up for a feed, wake Twin B immediately after and feed together.
This way, you’re not waking up twice.

Scenario 3: Neither needs night feeds
That’s the golden scenario.
Ideally, finish weaning before starting sleep training. That way, you’re not second-guessing hunger during training.

5. Sleep Training Itself

Now comes the actual training.
No matter what method you use (gentle or structured), apply it consistently until both babies fall asleep.

Yes — on night one, it can take longer than with one baby.
But splitting them up isn’t the solution.

Why?
Because once you put them together in the same room later, they’ll be unfamiliar with each other’s sounds — and it’ll be even harder to adjust.

So push through the first few nights, keep them together, and help them get used to each other’s rhythms.

This is exactly how you sleep train twins together — and yes, it works.

“It Sounds Great… But Feels Scary”

I know — all this sounds great in theory.

But in practical implementation, it can feel:

  • Scary

  • Overwhelming

  • Like you have double the questions and quadruple the stress

But don’t worry.
As a sleep consultant for twins, I’ve worked with so many twin families — and we’ve successfully sleep trained both babies in the same room to sleep through the night.

A Special Note to Twin Parents

Guess what?

In my sleep programs, I never charge a penny extra if you have twins.

Why?

Because I have a soft corner for twin parents.
You’ve already had to pay double for almost everything — you shouldn’t have to pay double for sleep.

Like I said, a few of my closest friends are twin parents.
I know their lives inside out. I know their struggles.
But I also know: sleep training twins was one of the most life-changing experiences for them.

And I hope every twin parent can reap the benefit of it — and show up as their best possible selves.
