How to Sleep Train a 9-Month-Old?

How to Sleep Train a 9-Month-Old?

If your baby is 9 months old and sleep has become a daily (and nightly) battle  you’re not alone. At this age, many families begin sleep training because the disruptions are no longer sustainable. Frequent night wakings, short naps, and bedtime resistance are common at this stage. But the good news? It’s still a great time to sleep train.

As a certified sleep consultant in Singapore, I’ve helped hundreds of families with 9-month-old sleep training, and it’s often one of the most rewarding stages to make change. Your baby is alert, more social, and eager to learn  and they can also learn to sleep well.

Let’s walk through how to sleep train your 9-month-old with a step-by-step plan that’s gentle, responsive, and backed by results.

🧠 Why Is 9 Months a Challenging Age?

At 9 months, babies are going through major developmental changes:

  • Learning to crawl, stand, cruise
  • Experiencing separation anxiety
  • Becoming more aware of bedtime routines and parental presence

That awareness can lead to bedtime stalling or frequent night wakings. But it also means your baby can understand new patterns quickly  which makes this a perfect time to introduce baby sleep training in a consistent, supportive way.

Signs Your 9-Month-Old Is Ready for Sleep Training

  • They rely on sleep props (rocking, nursing, patting)
  • They wake multiple times at night
  • Naps are short or inconsistent
  • Bedtime is a struggle every evening
  • They are gaining weight well and getting enough calories during the day

If this sounds like your household, know this: It’s not your fault, and it’s not too late.

Step-by-Step Sleep Training Plan for 9-Month-Olds

1. Set the Right Sleep Schedule

At this age, most babies thrive on:

  • 2 naps per day
  • Wake windows of 3–4 hours
  • Bedtime around 7–8 PM

A well-timed baby sleep schedule helps avoid overtiredness, which makes sleep training easier and more effective.

2. Decide on Night Feeds

By 9 months, many babies no longer need a night feed  especially if they’re on solids and getting enough daytime nutrition.

In my infant sleep program, I help parents:

  • Drop night feeds gradually
  • Reassure themselves that their baby is full enough
  • Replace feeding with other soothing techniques

Still unsure? Start by keeping one feed, and if your baby doesn’t seem hungry at that time, it may be time to remove it gently.

3. Stay Consistent for 3–5 Nights

This is the golden window. Night 1 might be hard. Night 2 might feel worse. But by Night 3, your baby starts to understand. By Night 5, many families see a transformation.

The key? Consistency.

  • Don’t change methods mid-way
  • Respond calmly, with love and clarity
  • Allow your baby the space to learn

Common Questions I Hear From Parents

Q: Isn’t my baby too old for sleep training now?
Not at all. In fact, 9 months is one of the most common ages families reach out to me. You’re right on time.
Q: What if they’re teething or learning to stand?
That’s part of development. If your baby is in mild discomfort, you can still sleep train just to add a little more support.
Q: What if they cry more than I expected?
Crying is communication, not damage. With the right method and a responsive approach, your baby will feel safe and learn to sleep better.

My Personal Experience

Many of the families in my 1:1 baby sleep training programs begin at this age. They’ve tried rocking, feeding, co-sleeping  and nothing works anymore. But with a simple shift in routine and a method that fits them, sleep becomes achievable.

I’ve seen babies go from 5–6 night wakings to sleeping through the night in just a week  not because they were left to cry alone, but because they were supported to sleep independently.
